Basil, Opal

Add to wish list

Opal Basil is a striking contrast to the standard, garden-variety basils. It maintains its deeply purple coloring throughout the season, adding an ornamental flare to your garden and appetizing color to any dish you may wish to prepare. Vinegars prepared with this variety have a beautiful, attractive purple hue. Dark Opal Basil also has a distinct anise after-taste that may lend itself well to many culinary dishes. Many gardeners use this as a border plant and it is a perfect companion plant for tomatoes. Harvest prior to blooming for the most intense flavor. It reseeds itself well and tolerates transplanting before the temperatures get too hot. Cooler climates will result in the boldest coloring, but it also tolerates heat and humidity well. In dry climates, mulch to retain moisture.
