Description

Also called Blue Grama, this is an important native plant of the Great Plains shortgrass prairie, found in much of North America from Manitoba south and west across the Rocky Mountains, Great Plains and Midwest States to Mexico. It makes a low tuft of fine textured blue-green leaves, with unusual spikes of bristly chartreuse flowers, aging to blond, that rise above the foliage and are held at an angle, somewhat resembling a swarm of flying insects. Attractive in the sunny border, rock garden and excellent for winter interest. Flowers may be cut and used in arrangements. Clumps may be easily divided in early spring. Self-sown seedlings may also appear. Very drought and cold tolerant once established.
