In our last article we discussed creating an outdoor room – an extension of the beauty and style inside your home, brought to life outdoors through landscaping in various ways. Another way to continue thinking of your outdoor oasis as a “room” is by considering following a few trends, in much the same way you would indoors by adding a new throw pillow to the sofa, painting a wall, or changing the curtains. In fact, sprucing up your outdoor “room” is even easier – and in many cases, less expensive than redecorating inside the home! For instance, this year’s Pantone Color of the Year is Tangerine Tango.
Even if you do not keep up with the Pantone Color of the Year, you probably have noticed that variations on this reddish orange hue are hot right now, in everything from fashion, home decor, cosmetics and even cars! Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® says that Tangerine Tango is “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset…” and it “…marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.” Why not liven up your outdoor room with a few pops of this energetic hue? Uncle John’s has lots of options for you among our shrubs, perennial and annual plants.
If you have just a bit of time and money, why not consider a few potted plants with tangerine colored blooms? Geraniums, Impatiens, New Guinea Impatiens, and Zinnias all come in a version of this stunning hue, and are rather inexpensive. Consider this option the throw pillow for your outdoor “room!” If you have a bit more time and space – consider a beautiful Trumpet Vine for an existing arbor (or if you haven’t an arbor, come see our landscape designer!). It’s gorgeous tangerine hued flowers are prolific, and a favorite of hummingbirds.
